The Challenge
The client, Transkor Group, specializes in non-contact magnetometric diagnostics for oil and gas pipelines. They required a solution to deploy their proprietary sensor technology underwater. The challenge was to package a sensitive data-logging embedded PC and power supply into a unit that could be operated by a diver in low-visibility conditions.
The Engineering Solution
We focused on the “housing and interaction” layer of the device, ensuring the sensitive electronics survived the subsea environment while remaining usable.
- Pressure-Resistant Enclosure: We engineered a custom watertight housing to encapsulate the single-board computer (SBC) and battery unit. The design utilizes precise O-ring sealing channels to ensure integrity at operational depth .
- Diver Interface (HMI): To allow the operator to manage data collection without surfacing, we integrated external waterproof magnetic/piezo switches. This allows the diver to Start, Stop, Pause recordings, and power cycle the device underwater.
- Sensor Rigging: We designed the structural frame to mount two electromagnetic sensors at fixed offsets from the central logger, ensuring consistent data acquisition geometry .
Technical Scope
- Mechanical Design: Full assembly and sealing design using SolidWorks, optimizing for neutral buoyancy and ergonomic handling .
- Hardware Integration: Internal wire routing and mounting of the embedded PC to interface with external sensors and control buttons.
- Rapid Prototyping: Iterative modeling of the housing to ensure fitment with existing Transkor sensor modules.
